This week we’ll explore Uranus and astrology plus the myths surrounding this unique planet. In both astrology and folklore, Uranus symbolizes rebellion, sudden change, and innovation.
In the world of astrology, it’s the planet that disrupts the status quo, pushing individuals and generations toward freedom, originality, and new ways of thinking. It governs anything that breaks from tradition – technology breakthroughs, social upheavals and individual defiance – and operates through sudden, often unexpected events that force change rather than gently guide it.
Astrology symbolism:
Ruler of Aquarius – after its discovery in 1781, Uranus became the modern ruler of Aquarius, aligning with the sign’s emphasis on independence, unconventional thinking and collective progress.
Influence affecting multiple generations:
Uranus moves slowly (about 7 years per sign), making its effects feel more like a generation’s world view rather than a person’s daily personality.
Key themes:
As mentioned above, rebellion, innovation, freedom, expanded consciousness and the urge to stand apart from the community are definitely evident in the personality of the planet Uranus.
Negative aspects:
Rebelliousness without cause, irresponsibility, and erratic behavior can also be evident in Uranus’ influence on astrological charts.
Positive aspects:
Enlightenment, progressiveness, objectivity, and ingenuity are the shining aspects of Uranus’ presence.
Mythological and Folklore origins:
In Greek creation mythology, Gaia (Mother Earth) emerged from Chaos and gave birth to Uranus (the Sky god) to be her equal. Uranus was with Gaia every night, and together they had children including the Titans, Cyclops and other lesser-known gods. But Gaia felt smothered by Uranus, so she had him castrated and forced to stay in the heavens, never to return to earth.
The symbol of Uranus:
A circle with a cross atop it. This represents matter over spirit, with the two semicircles symbolizing receptivity and association with unconventional love and relationships. This also embodies creation through disruption. Therefore, the breaking of the old to make room for the new: again, the ancient idea in folklore – where a figure steals fire or knowledge from the gods for humanity’s benefit, mirrors Uranus’ role in astrology: bringing enlightenment at great personal cost. Look closely at the usual glyph for Uranus and you’ll also see the outer semicircles forming the letter ‘H’ representing Sir William Herschel, who discovered the planet. This is the symbol most used by astrologers, while another glyph, that of a circle, with a dot at its center and an arrow pointing upwards, is used by other professionals and astronomers as the symbol for platinum as well as Uranus.
Astrologically, the next two weeks will be busy:
July 26 – the lunar nodes shift into Leo and Aquarius, starting a n 18-month change in eclipse themes. Saturn also stations retrograde in Pisces.
July 29 – A powerful Full Moon in Aquarius peaks alongside a major Sun-Jupiter conjunction in Leo, amplifying confidence, drive and the push to break free from old habits.
Late July to Early August – Tense aspects between Venus in Virgo and Mars in Gemini/Taurus creating minor friction in personal schedules, details, and relationships.
