We now delve into Pluto (our ninth planet) and astrology! In Greek mythology, Pluto is known primarily as ‘Hades’ and is the supreme ruler of the Underworld, guardian of hidden riches and the god of the dead! His name’s association with wealth reflects the belief that earth’s treasures: minerals, metals, and fertile soil – were his domain, not just death. He is one of the three powerful brothers who control the cosmos alongside Zeus (sky) and Poseidon (sea).
Pluto/Hades inherited the Underworld by drawing lots with his brothers after they successfully overthrew their father Cronus and the ruling Titans. The powerful brothers defeated the Titans in a massive 10-year war called the Titanomachy. Rather than fight over who would rule what, the brothers agreed to let fate decide by shaking up and drawing lots from a helmet. This is when Zeus drew the sky; Poseidon drew the sea, and Pluto/Hades drew the dark, unseen depths of the underworld.
Pluto/Hades is also known for his most famous story – the myth surrounding the kidnapping of Persephone, which the ancients used to explain the changing of the seasons. This forbidding god of the underworld fell in love with Persephone and carried her down to his dark kingdom to be his queen.
Her mother, Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and farming, was devastated by the loss and displayed her sorrow by refusing to let any crops grow on Earth. To save the Earth and humankind from starvation, the supreme god Jupiter arranged a deal wherein Persephone would spend half the year with Pluto/Hades and the other half with her mother.
When Persephone is away from her mother, there is winter on earth; however, when she returns to the surface and her mother, the earth enjoys spring and summer.
In astrology, Pluto/Hades represents transformation, power, regeneration, and the subconscious mind. It’s known as a generational planet because its slow movement shapes conditions in society rather than just daily personal moods.
Let’s look at Pluto/Hade’s impact on the signs of the Zodiac, when it’s in:
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): transforms how these signs handle inspiration, ego and strong beliefs by challenging old authority and pioneering new cultural ideals.
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): rebuilds tangible foundations, money systems, work environments and government institutions from the ground up.
Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): shifts the power of shared networks, technology, communications, and social norms into the hands of the community and digital spaces.
Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): deeply affects emotional undercurrents, historic
trauma, family foundations, and spiritual beliefs to uncover profound emotional renewal.
