Randy Stark, Poetry Editor, at Write Up The Road Publishing stopped me in the hall the other day and gave me some postcards that he’d collected of artworks from several museums.
My reaction to the one above, titled “Girls” (Red Buttons) by Reginald Marsh (1898-1954) was simply – wow! Both dresses look like other photos I’ve seen of the styles being worn then, and the hair looks exactly right too.
Really enjoyed his style of painting, too, because you can almost feel the fabric.
The take away for this blog? Don’t overlook art from other eras when you can learn something new from it. I’d really like to paint soft folds and materials like that. Got to do some research on Mr. Marsh, as his is a completely new name to me.
What a trip that’s going to be, ‘discovering’ a successful artist who worked long before I was born. Far out! – A.R. Tist
A.R., I think you’ll enjoy Mr. Marsh. He portrayed urban America of the 1930’s and 1940’s, when there was more of a sidewalk hustle and bustle than now.
