Some Choice Bits

This post is over weighted on the male side, but I think there is some redeeming balance when considering the artwork of Lotte Laserstein, and the random video clip regarding Allegra Hyde. And as for the links in the music section, or any links actually: if the link has rotted, googling the subject is worth the time.

Literature

Clive James on the poetry of Robert Frost: “His easy-seeming, usually iambic, conversational forward flow is a deception, a way of not just bringing show-stopping moments to your attention but of moving them past your attention, so that you will form the correct impression that he does not want the show stopped for such a secondary consideration as brilliance.”

Rudyard Kipling on a good night’s sleep: “It was the forty-fathom slumber that clears the soul and eye and heart, and sends you to breakfast ravening.”

Willa Cather on waking up the next morning: “Day broke with silvery brightness on the summer sage. The sky grew pink, the sand grew gold. The dawn-wind brought through the windows the acrid smell of the sagebrush: an odour that is peculiarly stimulating in the early morning, when it always seems to promise freedom… large spaces, new beginnings, better days.”

William Faulkner on a morning ritual: “He puts his shoes on, stomping into them, like he does everything, like he is hoping all the time he really can’t do it and can quit trying to.”

Ezra Pound (c/b about the Biden admin): “Mouths biting empty air,/The still stone dogs”

Friedrich Nietzsche telling like it is: “Without a constant counterfeiting of the world by means of numbers, man could not live.”

William Blake also telling like it is: “Now the speaking serpent walks/In mild humility/And the just man rages in the wilds/Where lions roam.”
