Think of what basic human amenities you’re doing without, and what basic human amenities people worse off than you are doing without, and then think of the billions of dollars wasted on devices to kill human beings. I ask myself: what happened?
It seemed like with the peace movement and the cultural awakenings of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, we Americans were evolving, becoming nicer, calmer, simpler. Braver.
In those days, Senators and Congresspersons WERE NOT AFRAID to challenge the president of their own party. (Senator Eugene McCarthy primaried incumbent President Johnson. Senator Ted Kennedy primaried incumbent President Carter.) In those days, citizens WERE NOT AFRAID to march against war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_movement#United_States
Our Christian religious leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, among them, protested against war and inequality. We also looked for healing from Asian spiritual philosophies. Let’s return to nature we said. Peace. This is the era of limits we said. Small is beautiful.
Remember this? What the hell happened? What have we become?
IMAGINE written by John Lennon & Yoko Ono Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try No hell below us, above us only sky Imagine all the people living for today... Imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too Imagine all the people living life in peace... Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger - a brotherhood of man Imagine all the people sharing all the world... You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DNwYnJivJw
