The art of doing nothing

Is a blank book as exciting and yet intimidating to a writer as a blank canvas is to an artist? Do we just splash some paint on to break the sheer white of the surface, or write a nonsense paragraph to get the engine started? I think the answer must be “yes.” Because any beginning can lead to something, and that something might be the greatest portrait you’ve ever created, or genuine literature rather than giving in to genre.
