PRECIOUS MEMORIES

Walking with my sister and brother-in-law
On a winter evening
Admiring the neighborhood’s Christmas decorating prowess
Sweet.
After about ten minutes my sister says
Why does everything look so dark?
Turns out she’s wearing sunglasses, not her regular glasses.
You’re ready for assisted living her husband says.

ON THE LONGEST PUBLIC FISHING PIER ON THE CALIFORNIA COASTLINE

Seagulls struggle with body image,
Like they’re competing for an international crown,
Jealous of and shamed by
All the long lenses and phones focused on the pelicans.
Everybody’s a YouTube star.
Somebody says.

A DREAM BASED ON A TRUE STORY, WITH ALMOST ZERO DISTORTION

Coming from not really having money
We bought when it was
The time to buy
We sold when it was
The time to sell.
It sounds like a cliche for a reason.
I’ve never enjoyed a challenge
Or thrived on adversity.
Things are tough enough.
