
If artists could wave a magic wand and hey presto! that stubborn tree that refused to look like anything except daubs of paint would at least begin to resemble something from a forest. Or the still life looked more like a traditional art form than a stiff life. The portrait looked less like an underworld thug and more like a kindly philanthropist.
